About Us

In 2010 Prof. Nikolaos Zacharias began the operation of the Laboratory of Archaeometry and since 2012 with the support of the first two graduate students. From then on it continuously expands in both equipment and lab members. Today, thirteen years later, the Laboratory of Archaeometry operates with 16 researchers (the Scientific Director, 5 post-doc and 11 doctorate researchers) and includes a wide range of instrumentation making it one of the best equipped Archaeometry Labs in Greece, focusing primarily on analytical, non-invasive education and research of archaeological and geoarchaeological collections, absolute dating and digital cultural studies.

The Laboratory with an extensive list of published research work is active both on a national level (collaborating with academic and research institutions and the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports) as well as on an international level (collaborating with E.U. organizations through research projects).

Analytical Techniques

          -   Analysis of archaeological materials: ceramics, glass, metals, mortars, stone, pigments
          -   Identification of raw materials, provenance and production technology
          -   Emphasis on non-destructive and on-site analytical techniques (portable microscopy, p-XRF)

-   Use of advanced electron microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM) for the investigation of complex research questions
          -   Use of luminescent techniques for the absolute dating of archaeological materials (mortars, stone, sediments, ceramics).

Digital Technologies

          -   Surveying using modern equipment and software (Geodetic GNSS Receiver, Geodetic Station)
          -   Documentation of monuments and archeological sites in combination with the use of state-of-the-art drones and software for the
production of high accuracy and definition orthophotos, digital terrain models, 3D modeling

          -   GIS and spatial analysis in archaeological research

Moreover, the Laboratory supports and provides training for the MSc on Cultural Heritage Materials and Technologies (CultTech). The programme is a collaboration between the Department of History, Archaeology and Cultural Resources Management (University of the Peloponnese), the National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos and the National Observatory of Athens.
  • Operating since 2015
  • 48 graduate students
  • More than 15 publications from thesis projects
